INTRODUCTION Over the past 30 years, the introduction of reconstructive techniques incorporating microvascular free tissue transfer has transformed the quality of life of patients undergoing head and neck surgery. The microsurgeon’s ability to transfer autologous tissues comprised of bone, functioning muscle, skin or composites has dramatically improved functional outcomes for all head and neck reconstructive procedures, whether oncologic, congenital or traumatic.
