INTRODUCTION Hypopharynx is the caudal part of the pharynx, also called laryngopharynx, extending from the hyoid bone to the lower margin of the cricoid cartilage. It is a dynamic conduit between the oropharynx and oesophagus and has three subsites – pyriform sinus, post-cricoid area and posterior pharyngeal wall. Laryngeal and hypopharyngeal cancers are often clubbed together due to their anatomic proximity. However, hypopharyngeal cancers are distinctly different from laryngeal cancers in terms of presentation, management and prognosis.
