INTRODUCTION Outcome assessment constitutes an integral part of patient management. Modern healthcare systems demand robust outcome measures, which should be disease specic and reect the concerns of the patient. Their measurement is compounded by the fact that patients, carers and healthy ‘observers’ have different opinions as to what constitutes the most favourable outcome.1
