Dental caries Dental caries is a dynamic, multifactorial, bacterial disease of teeth. The initial stage in dental caries is termed the initial enamel lesion. This typically arises at sites where dental plaque (a microbial biofilm adherent to tooth tissues) is persistent. The underlying process in the initial stages involves acid dissolution of calcified dental tissue creating a dynamic imbalance between demineralization and remineralization in favour of the former.
