ABSTRACT
This chapter considers the historical theatre of automata as the pre-history of 21st-century media, and examines the creation of docile subjects under mechanical algorithms and digital algorithms. The mechanics of discipline once observed in Foucault’s Discipline and Punish has found another expression in the haptic surveillance of quantified self technologies.
