ABSTRACT
The chapter offers a sound explanation of the emergence of legal pluralism in India, emphasising the comparable nature of tribal customary laws with the personal laws of mainland religious communities, charting their colonial origins. The author draws our attention to the patriarchal leanings of these personal legal codes, and the plight of Indian women that has often been used by those who advocate a UCC.
