ABSTRACT

In 1988, Congress passed an important piece of legislation affecting the opportunities of persons with a disability, the Technology Related Assistance for Individuals with Disabilities Act of 1988 (PL 100–407). This law provided program support to states to assist them in establishing statewide assistive technology programs for all individuals with a disability. The definitions that evolved during the development of that legislation helped clarify the role of technology in meeting the needs of persons who are disabled.
