The proceedings of the 15th International Cancer Congress held in August 1990 in Hamburg, Germany, included a round table discussion on “Tobacco-Specific N-Nitrosamines (TSNA)”. 1 Four years later, the Program Committee for the 16th International Cancer Congress, held in October-November 1994 in New Delhi, India, deemed it of importance and of general interest to have a symposium on TSNA. As Hecht pointed out, there have been during the 5 years preceding the Symposium more than 100 scientific publications on the chemistry, biochemistry, bioassays, and molecular biology of the highly carcinogenic 4-(methyl-nitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanone (NNK) alone. As this reflects the significance of the TSNA to the cancer research community, 2 the participants of this symposium greatly appreciate the decision of the editors of Critical Reviews in Toxicology to assign a special issue of the journal to the papers presented at the TSNA Symposium.
