ABSTRACT

A computer aided engineering approach has been used to investigate a steering wheel ‘niggle’ on a medium sized passenger car. The approach was in four phases: operating tests, modal analysis tests, modal and finite element modelling and problem investigation. Detailed tuning of rubber components in the suspension system was found to be beneficial in desentizing the vehicle to the effects of wheel out of round or balance.

In addition the models were used to understand the effects of basic suspension geometry on this problem.
