ABSTRACT

This paper presents and discusses the cyclic and the monotonic behavior of steel beam-to-column connections with extended end plate, based on experimental tests and numerical simulation. Several full-scale tests were performed at the Instituto Superior Técnico (cyclic tests) and at Escola de Engenharia de São Carlos – USP (monotonic tests). Besides the type of loading the tests differ on the type of cross sections: while in Portugal the profiles used were European cold formed sections in Brazil they were welded cross sections, following typical American geometry. A numerical model is proposed and its accuracy is evaluated on the basis of experimental tests. A discussion of the results obtained in this bilateral research is made and a comparison with the component methodology proposed in Eurocode-3 is also presented.
