ABSTRACT

The present study proposes an alternative structural control system using non-structural, short span beam members for long-lived steel buildings. These members absorb vibrational energy by their hysteretic damping performance. The present system needs limited special devices and has little influence on the architectural planning. The dynamic performances of test models on a vibrator table under random motion show the effectiveness of the control system. The elastic-plastic behaviors obtained from thirty-three earthquake response simulations are also discussed in this paper.
