ABSTRACT

Major and minor scales have three scale degrees that differ from each other: the third, sixth, and seventh. Most mixture arises from the borrowing of scale degree ↓6 into the major mode from the minor mode. Scale degree ↓3 and ↓7 are also possible, but less common. The only borrowed tone that commonly occurs in the minor mode is scale degree ↑3 from the major, usually at the end of a composition to create what is called a “Picardy third.”
