ABSTRACT

Metric modulation is a change of tempo from one measure to the next that is executed by keeping the speed of a specific note value in one measure equal (or constant) to that of a note value in the next measure. The tempo of the piece will speed up or slow down, depending on the relationship of the two notes. The meter and beat structure may change from simple to compound or complex and vice versa, and the number of beats in a measure may or may not change.
