ABSTRACT
Modes are scale formations that were the basis of most Western music until the evolution of major and minor scales. While the pre-tonal use of modes is very different than our concept of scales, modern modes are generally treated as major or minor scales with one or more altered pitches. Modes became more common in the twentieth century as a means of evoking an “old” sound and as an aid for improvising in jazz music.
