ABSTRACT

In freely atonal music, the ordering of the pitches in the set is not important to the organization of the music. In serial music, the ordering is essential. All of the pitches in the set must generally appear before the set can repeat in either its original or a modified form. The most common form of serial music involves cycling through all twelve chromatic pitches. Serial sets, or tone rows, can be of any size. You can still rely on the techniques you have already learned for singing and hearing post-tonal music.
