ABSTRACT

This paper describes the ground treatment of dredged fine sand fill using horizontal wick drains combined with vibrating roller compaction. The site underlain by thick silty/fine sand is situated on the north shore of the Meghna River, Bangladesh. Horizontal wick drains is placed within the dredged fill during fill construction; each fill layer with horizontal wick drains is compacted by vibrating roller. After treatment SPTs, CPTs and loading plate tests are carried out, indicating that SPT N-values increase 3~4 times and employer’s requirements on bearing capacity of dredged fill, post-settlement and anti-liquefaction are reached. Thus, 3.20 million USD is economized in the costs of ground treatment compared to the stone column method in tender.
