ABSTRACT

This chapter explores how art and photography be used to enhance self-awareness among graduate-entry audiologists. The author worked on the development, implementation, management and evaluation of programmes designed to maximise the communication abilities of adults with acquired hearing loss. This involved the delivery of individual and group communication training courses, including lip-reading tuition, and various forms of training, such as hearing tactics, assertiveness and relaxation. Models or frameworks for reflection are introduced to the class to help students organise their reflective thoughts in a structured way. The University of Manchester became one of the first UK higher education establishments to offer graduate entry route into the audiology profession, which replaced the previous on-the-job training. Theoretical knowledge needed to be tied into personal development. The main role of an audiologist has traditionally been the identification and management of hearing loss, involving the prescription and fitting of hearing aids, if required.
