chapter  5
Drinking with Vova: an individual entrepreneur between illegality and informality
ByABEL POLESE
Pages 17

The first time I met Vova, in April 2003, he was working as a taxi driver at night, earning €1-3 per fare, trying to recover from a long legal battle that had cost him his health, passport, property and several months of his life. However, seven years later in the summer of 2011, Vova took his wife, children and even grandchildren on an all-inclusive holiday to Turkey spending more than $3,000 for a week-long stay. How this was possible, and how he recovered from disgrace, is the main focus of this chapter.
