ABSTRACT

This chapter concerns the development and status of aquaculture in Thailand. The rapid development of this industry since 1970 is carefully documented using a species-by-species approach. Each species is analyzed as to inputs, outputs, yields, and constraints to development. A cost-benefit analysis is also performed to determine the viability of coastal aquaculture as compared to small-scale fisheries. The chapter then goes on to discuss briefly the role and policies of government in present and future development. In summary, in spite of several major constraints, the industry appears viable and capable of contributing to Thailand’s economic development.
