ABSTRACT

Management of mining and processing waste is one of the major physical environmental concerns associated with mining operations. This concern increases significantly where the mine waste materials contain reactive sulfide minerals such as pyrite. Reactive pyrite is the compound primarily associated with potential acid drainage. Where acid drainage occurs, it poses a major risk of adversely affecting surrounding water and soil resources. Acid drainage can be a long-term issue, and hence control of acid drainage is essential for minimizing the risk of any ongoing environmental liability from mining operations.
