ABSTRACT

A method is proposed for the analysis of time dependent stress transfer and seismic recurrence processes in deep level mines. An essential feature of the method is to represent large scale failure as a hierarchical process on many length scales. A particular scheme for generating sets of cracks which are equivalent to existing finer scale fracture sets, in a given spatial region, is outlined. The scheme for equivalent crack allocation is tested for two particular cases in which specific sets of cracks are assigned in a given region and appears to work well. An example to illustrate the potential analysis of time dependent energy release associated with a simplified mining problem is given.
