A control system for tunnel boring machines in jointed rock
More and more tunnels are excavated using tunnel boring machines (TBM). The possibilities to use the informations available during the excavation of a tunnel in order to determine the required support or evaluate a rock mass class (RMC) are discussed in the paper. Two different examples are used to show the power of a fuzzy based evaluation system. The same procedure can be used to control the tunnel boring machine during the excavation. The advantages and disadvantages of the suggested system are discussed.
