ABSTRACT

Acid atmospheric deposition is causing a great damage to the mountain watersheds in the Czech Republic. The contemporary forest decline in the Ore and Jizera Mountains is the result of synergism of a number of factors such as air toxicity, acidification of ecosystems and degradation of soil and low resistance of forest stands. Forest regeneration has been reduced by acidification of the habitats. The acidity of surface waters should be lower than that of precipitation, but in some cases it has exceeded that of rain. Control of these hazards is essential to protect such mountain watersheds.
