ABSTRACT

The monitoring of runoff and sediment concentration at 15 stations on the three major rivers of central Albania since 1955 indicates that sediment concentrations range from 0.17 to 6.34 kg/m3. Reservoir sedimentation surveys suggest regional sediment yields ranging from 4.2 to 150 tha/year in watersheds between 66 and 15,600 ha. Although, there is some suggestion that sediment yield is affected by altitude, the main control of sediment release is the distribution or easily eroded rock types. The distribution of sediment concentration in the rivers of middle Albania is log-normal. Logarithmically transformed, the variables for river discharge and sediment concentration are linked by linear relationships. The relationship between annual water and sediment discharges is linear.
