ABSTRACT

Several landmarks have been established in the domain of plant sciences during the past half century but the discovery of phytoalexin is undoubtedly an outstanding one since it has opened up a new vista in plant pathology. Müller and Börger (1940) laid a firm foundation for the phytoalexin concept, although in the beginning it did not receive much researchers’ attention. However, it has been studied with an increasing awareness for the last two decades but the controversy as to whether phytoalexin alone confers resistance to all plant diseases or this is one of the several mechanisms of disease resistance of plants remains.
