ABSTRACT

There are three sources of gold and silver: primary gold and silver mines, base metal mines and, for gold alone, placer mining operations. In 1992, Canada ranked fifth in world gold production (Couturier 1993). Canadian gold production, as listed in Table 6.1, comes predominantly from auriferous-quartz mines, followed by base metal mines and placer mining operations (Couturier 1993). Figure 6.1 indicates the locations of these operations. The maps of ecozones (Figures 1.3 and 1.4) show that most current operations are in Boreal and Cordilleran zones.
