ABSTRACT

Global production of iron ore is almost 1,000 Mt per year, of which Canada typically accounts for about four percent (Franz et al. 1986; Boyd 1992). This places Canada seventh among producers, after the former Soviet Union, Brazil, Australia, China, India, and the United States. Despite a downward trend in production over the past decade, iron ore is still Canada’s sixth most valuable non-petroleum mineral, as Table 1.1 indicates.
