ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the types of rocks which have been used for construction in Sydney Region. The relative size of resources is shown to be a critical feature of the Sydney scene and the failure of government to take a responsible stand on resource management is a serious criticism made with the hope that it is not too late to take some belated action. The latter type of rock is not being specificially quarried in Sydney at present but andesitic basalt is imported into Sydney from the South Coast quarries. Earlier in the 1800's the production of sandstone for building stone and Telford basecourse dominated the quarry scene. The chapter also discusses the importance of the various Petrographic Properties. It concludes the scope of work now being undertaken by the Standards Association of Australia in relation to rock products and slag.
