ABSTRACT

The semi-active fluid dampers can dissipate the energy and tune the frequency of a structure, so they can suppress the structural vibration. A control algorithm based on maximum energy dissipation for the semi-active fluid dampers is presented in this study. The algorithm indicates that the voltage is only put on maximal value or minimal value according to the switching line. Further study indicates that there is not exist switching line and the voltage is only put on maximum value, which state is called as “passive on state”. In this way, the voltage does not need to be instantaneously changed during vibration. The effects of the semi-active fluid dampers on tuned frequency are investigated by using LQR in the semi-active control. The result that the semi-active dampers can tune the frequency to a very small extent is found, so the energy dissipation of the semi-active fluid dampers affects the reduction of vibration of structures significantly, however, the tuned frequency does not influence on the control performance significantly and the performance of the control algorithm based on maximum energy dissipation criteria 352presented in this study is nearly same as that of LQR.
