ABSTRACT

After a brief review of the cooperation of seismologists and engineers in the advancement of engineering seismology, some problems for further organized joint study at the linkage of seismology and engineering are discussed. Problems discussed are as follows. (1) Ground motion parameters and their estimation (data bank of strong motion records, long period motion ground motion, large velocity pulse near fault, ground motion field, attenuation laws for regions with few acceleration, and seismologist’s generated time history (2) Seismic hazard assessment (uncertainties in seismicity assessment, and deterministic and probabilistic methods of earthquake hazard assessment), and (3) Design code related problems (duration of strong motion, topographical site effect, and functional or consequence design levels their definition).
