ABSTRACT

The Government’s laudable intention to raise standards in schools rests on clear measurable targets. It is widely recognized what all schools and all teachers are required to achieve. The targets are very clear and the timetable for success emphatically laid down. It is, of course, imperative for the Department for Education and Employment (DfEE) to state what is to be learnt and how all subjects are to be taught, to put forward clear guidelines for initial teaching training and for every detail of the delivery of the curriculum, but the success of these policies needs to be carefully measured. This is why inspection is such an important part of the Government’s strategy.
