ABSTRACT

St Luke’s is a Church of England primary school in Cambridge with pupils from a variety of cultural backgrounds. In this chapter, the authors believe that children’s learning about different cultures can be enriched and reinforced by visits to museums, workshops, and art galleries. The whole school policy of Equal Opportunities is the keystone of their school curriculum. This policy was the result of a year-long series of discussions by the staff, governing body and local community associations. The aim of the author’s policy is to equip the children with the essential skills of numeracy, literacy, science, basic technology, aesthetic and religious education so that they can become fully participating members of our multicultural society. Equally, in maths, the children were asked to design a board game with rules, a task which made heavy language demands and which was culturally divisive since many children have little experience of such games.
