ABSTRACT

The advances already made in the areas of anti-racism/multiculturalism within the curriculum and schools generally are thus clearly endangered. The governors of schools have a greater say in curriculum matters. They must resist any white parental pressures to turn the clock backwards in schools where movements towards education justice for all has begun. Schools should remind parents that Religious Education has a special status as part of the basic curriculum of the school and should make available to them, as we have done, the locally agreed syllabus or a summary of it. All children are given that knowledge at our school. This clearly reinforces the fact that the school and the mathematics Department greatly value the contributions made by non-European cultures and demonstrates the power of mathematics as a universal means of communication. Schools need to re-think their staffing and promotion policies with alarming speed.
