Ward et al. (1995) carried out a qualitative analysis, based on grounded theory, of offense process descriptions gathered from 26 incarcerated intrafamilial or extrafamilial child molesters, none of whom had received any specialized treatment for sexual offenders before their participation in the study. The end product of the analysis was a nine-stage model which describes the sequence of events, cognitions, emotions, and behaviors that culminate in the sexual assault of a child-the Child-Molester Model (CM).
