ABSTRACT
How rhythmic can speech be? Galileo is said to have employed his own singing voice as a chronometer to discover the law of falling bodies (Drake, 1975). Such stability in vocal behavior suggests mechanisms for the control of speech timing at various levels, from the pulsating production of syllables to the time patterns that are shared and mutually understood by two persons engaged in conversation.
