ABSTRACT

Most sports require an element of skill combined with physical attributes such as balance, speed, agility, quickness and power. But because the average gym programme is dominated by muscles working at slow contraction speeds and in isolation, these attributes are not significantly enhanced. Many athletes fail to get the most out of their workout by training in this way. The principle of functional carryover as explained in Chapter 7 helps us to understand that our training should mimic the way we want to move in our sport. In this chapter we introduce the principles of coaching sport-specific skills in order to improve carryover into athletic sport performance. We identify the types of training an athlete needs to perform to make them quicker, stronger and more agile.
