ABSTRACT

Spotting is a term commonly used in the gym. If someone asks for a ‘spot’, it generally means they want you to watch them whilst they lift a weight and assist if they struggle midway through a repetition. For a personal trainer spotting has to mean far more. Effective spotting is a complex and skilled science in which the trainer has to monitor and provide feedback on every aspect of the client’s performance to ensure that they are training as effectively as possible. In this chapter we will learn how to spot our clients to ensure that they exercise with good form and technique using the correct acute training variables. We will also demonstrate how to perform touch training, using touch to position the client, indicate range of motion or stimulate muscles to produce greater force.
