The purpose of the chapter is to indicate the unique ways that early, middle, and older adolescents grieve and the ways that their grief affects, and is affected by, developmental issues. The chapter is organized around these topics:
• Brief sketches of three grieving adolescents • Developmental phases of adolescence • Bereavement considered as a life crisis that threatens completion
of developmental tasks • Examples of critical life tasks unfolding in the lives of bereaved
adolescents • A discussion of the type of research that is needed and the ways
we can help.
