ABSTRACT

Congo (L.) 5 July 1960. Mutiny of the Force Publique, the republic’s national army. Six days later Mr Lumumba, the Prime Minister, asks for United Nations help and Mr Tshombe declares the secession of Katanga. On 5 September, President Kasavubu dismisses Mr Lumumba, who refuses to resign, and on 14 September Colonel Mobutu, the Army commander, declares Army is assuming power. On 12 February 1961, Lumumba is reported murdered. Throughout successive changes of Government, President Kasavubu remains in office until, on 25 November 1965, he is deposed by Mobutu, who assumes the presidency.
