ABSTRACT

William Gutteridge is Head of the Department of Languages and Modern Studies at Lanchester Polytechnic, Coventry, and author of numerous articles and contributions to symposia about Africa, and of the following books: Armed Forces in New States (London: Oxford University Press, 1962); Military Institutions and Power in the New States (London: Pall Mall, 1965) and The Military in African Politics (London: Methuen, 1969). Richard Booth is a Research Associate at the ISS and has been associated with the Institute’s annual publication The Military Balance.
