Only the prospect of imminent economic collapse or massive invasion (neither of which appears likely during the next decade) could be expected to force South Africa to agree to such concessions. If South Africa were in fact faced with an all-out Soviet-and Cuban-led assault, the Western powers might take active steps to defuse the crisis, but these would be likely to fall far short of a defence pact with Pretoria. In any event, for the time being at least, South Africa appears to have written off the chances of an alliance with the West.
