ABSTRACT

Lateral asymmetry of cortical function has been studied for at least a century, but until recently most studies have involved clinical-pathological correlations in lesioned humans. Indeed, the post mortem examination, has become the “gold standard” criterion by which claims of brain behavior relationships have been tested. Although it has always been recognized that the lesioned brain is abnormal, so that inferences about normal function are only indirect, the objective proof provided by an autopsy has prevailed as the empirical touchstone.
