ABSTRACT

The recent Frontline documentary, League of Denial, and the book on which it was based (Fainaru-Wada & Fainaru, 2013), have begun a national conversation about sports-related, traumatic brain injuries. The concern is broader than concussions sustained by NFL players; the concern extends to kids who play football and “head” soccer balls in school and community sports leagues. The concern is about the long-term impact of repeated blows to the head and eventual neurocognitive disorders (NCD). This chapter is about NCDs, including those due to traumatic brain injury. While NCDs are ostensibly brain disorders, questions arise. Do they have a psychological or personality component? Specifically, what are the DSM-5 and Adlerian formulations or case conceptualizations of these disorders?
