ABSTRACT
A philosopher searches for the truth about the world. But what is the nature of truth ? What does it mean for a statement to be true ? In this chapter, we will consider various responses to these questions. In the fi rst two sections, we will examine two different theories of truth: the correspondence theory of truth and the pragmatist theory of truth. We will then discuss the movie Hilary and Jackie , a “multiple-perspective fi lm” that retells the “same” story from different perspectives. The viewer must wonder whether there is a true interpretation of the events or whether all interpretations of the events are true . Section 1.3 offers a brief introduction to the fi lm that will draw your attention to things to watch for during your viewing. The material beginning with Section 1.4 makes heavy reference to the movie, so it is most profi tably read after you have fi nished watching the movie. In the remaining sections of the chapter, we will explore some theories of relativism with respect to the truth.
