ABSTRACT

Metaphors express comparisons and highlight features or relational qualities that do not exist within the same domain. Yet these comparisons often aid in the comprehension and understanding of one or both of the concepts expressed in the metaphor. We may use the preceding quote from Goethe to help illustrate this point in that one way in which to understand an individual’s personality is as an intricately woven tapestry, with each thread representing different experiences and traits. The many different qualities of each thread (i.e., length, texture, color, etc.) and the way in that they are combined produce a unique work. Although many single threads exist, these are subordinate to the coherent whole of the individual.
