A long-standing subject of laboratory studies, the influence of the presence of others on individual performance, pertains to one of the oldest fields of research in Experimental Social Psychology. Observed by Norman Triplett as early as the end of the nineteenth century, this at times positive and at times negative influence has recently aroused new interest ( cf. Guerin, 1993).
