Sociocultural Values and the Real Self

Sociocultural values can either potentiate and reinforce or impair and inhibit real-self expression and fulfillment. Contemporary sociocultural forces do not have as powerful an influence as the parents during the vulnerable developmental years of formation of the self; nevertheless, in later years, they do affect the functioning of the self! The more sociocultural values stress the individual's freedom and rights along with his responsibilities, the more they potentiate real-self expression.
