Issue 4: Practical Workplace Changes and Challenges
The purpose of this chapter is to put forth a future research agenda on how workplace interventions can be utilized across the lifespan to increase positive outcomes for both employees and organizations. First, we define workplace interventions and describe the four types we consider through - out the chapter. Second, we describe two aging and development theories, namely socio-emotional selectivity (SEST) theory (Carstensen, 1992) and selection, optimization, and compensation (SOC) theory (Baltes & Baltes, 1990), which we use to develop suggestions for our research agenda. Third, we incorporate several underutilized conceptualizations of age that may impact the effectiveness of workplace interventions across the lifespan. Finally, we focus on each workplace intervention separately and discuss future research possibilities.
