Clinicians favoring a personalized-individualized approach to hypnosis and hypnotherapy are often at odds with researchers favoring the use of a standard hypnotic protocol in the laboratory. Clinicians tend to emphasize that in the hypnotherapeutic interaction, therapists constantly match suggestions to clients' reactions. Standard hypnotic protocols, such as those delivered by tape-recorder, pose severe limitations on this continuous therapist/client interaction.
