ABSTRACT

If you have been wondering what the title of this chapter means, you can forget it. It really has nothing to do with what I will be saying. When I was first asked to give an address and was told it should revolve around the theme of "Erickson: The Essence of the Story," I said, "Sure." But when I started to think about how to pinpoint the essence of his work, work so sweeping and so revolutionary in its scope, I was in a quandary. Therefore, the title really refers to the uncertainty of my approach to this most challenging of tasks.
